Why we built Rate My Photo
Choosing a photo can be surprisingly difficult. The images we like most are not always the ones that communicate best to someone seeing them for the first time. Friends can help, but their opinions may be inconsistent—or too polite to be useful.
We created Rate My Photo to offer another perspective. The tool can rate many kinds of photographs, but it is intended primarily for images of people—especially photos in which a face is clearly visible. It evaluates the complete image, including the subject, lighting, composition, sharpness, background, and overall visual appeal.
This makes it particularly useful for selecting profile photos and portraits to post online, whether for a dating app, LinkedIn, a professional biography, a portfolio, or social media.
How it works
Technology informed by human taste
Our deep-learning model was trained on more than 20,000 photographs annotated with human-generated aesthetic scores. It looks for visual patterns that influence how an image is perceived and returns a simple score from 1 to 10. We care about accurate, repeatable results and continue improving the software as image-analysis technology develops.
